The Science Behind Natural Solubilization

Did you know that solubilizers can affect the efficacy of alternative preservation systems?

As brands move to natural ingredients and sustainable formulas, their formulators identified a new gap in their ingredient portfolio: natural solubilizers. Traditional solubilizers are effective but petrochemical-derived and ethoxylated, or naturally-derived, but not very effective. Inolex specifically designed a novel 100% natural polyglyceryl ester (PGE) surfactant, LexSolv™ Essential, which provides efficient solubilization (micro-emulsification of oil phases in water) comparable to e.g. Polysorbate-20 and PEG-40 Hydrogenated Castor oil (both are petro-derived and contain 1,4-dioxane). We have tested that for several different oil phases such as fragrances, essential oils, preservation ingredients and actives such as tocopherol acetate.

Further, it is known that typical solubilizers can cause lipophilic actives or preservation ingredients to lose efficacy. Such components either co-micellize with or are sequestered in the solubilizer micelles, impeding bioavailability and rendering them less active. We hypothesize that an approach to achieve these two contradictory requirements – effective and robust solubilization combined with maintained solute bioavailability – is to utilize solubilizers with fast micellar dynamics. LexSolv™ Essential was designed to exhibit fast micellar dynamics, that delivers solubilization without compromising solute activity, including preservation efficacy.

Benefit of Fast Micellar Dynamics

The fast kinetics of monomer-micelle exchange and micelle disintegration and reformation enhance probability of solute-substrate interaction, in turn enhancing bioavailability and activity of the solubilized compounds.

  • Sufficient surface activity enables generation of thermodynamically stable. clear microemulsions
  • Faster kinetics replenish solubilized compounds in aqueous phase
  • Increase instantaneous bioavailability
